Do you want to optimize the quality of your child's sleep? One of the most important things to check is your baby's body temperature. Your baby should not be too hot or too cold to sleep peacefully. After checking that the temperature of the room is ideal, it is important to choose a comfortable outfit adapted to each season.

Pajamas for every season

When it comes to baby's sleep, keep it simple. The ideal outfit consists of a cotton bodysuit and pajamas, the materials of which can change according to the season and the temperature of the room. In winter, a long-sleeved bodysuit and velvet pajamas are best, while in summer, a short-sleeved bodysuit and thin cotton pajamas will suffice. In hot weather, when it is difficult to maintain the temperature of the room below 25 degrees, it is possible to make baby sleep in a bodysuit in a light sleeping bag.

Always choose sleepwear made from organically grown cotton, which is softer and more respectful of sensitive skin. This choice is essential when we know that a baby sleeps approximately 12 hours per night, it is essential to choose bodysuits and pyjamas in organic cotton, guaranteed without chemical treatment nor harmful substances.

At the beginning of his life, baby will be more comfortable in a one-piece pyjama like a romper. These pyjamas closed by snap buttons in the back or on the front allow to avoid that baby discovers himself during the night. They also ensure a good maintenance of the layer. When the child grows and walks, you can opt for a two-piece pyjama, without feet, then more practical, especially during potty training.

What's the difference between a summer sleeping bag and a winter sleeping bag?

First of all, let's remember that the sleeping bag is to be preferred to a blanket which could be dangerous for the little ones. The baby blanket should not be used before the age of 18 months. The sleeping bag allows to keep baby warm, without him uncovering himself during the night while leaving him free of his movements.

In case of very cold weather, you can opt for a sleeping bag with a TOG (heat index) higher than 2. Winter sleeping bags are thick and quilted, they form a warm little cocoon in which baby will feel perfectly safe and can fall asleep peacefully.

Sleeping bags with a TOG of 2 are suitable for rooms with a temperature between 17 and 20 degrees, those with a TOG of 3 are suitable for rooms with a temperature below 17 degrees.

However, in the summer season, choose an unpadded summer sleeping bag with a TOG of 0.5. In case of hot weather, you can have your baby sleep in a diaper cover, without pyjamas and in a light sleeping bag. But be careful, even in the middle of summer, not to let your baby sleep with his shirt off, as he could catch a cold during the night, since during certain phases of sleep the body temperature drops. Moreover, most babies can't stand sleeping without anything on them, they often prefer to be covered with a small cloth to feel reassured and safe.

Wondering if the temperature in your child's room is ideal for a peaceful sleep? Set the thermostat between 17° and 19° and check his temperature by touching his hands and belly. The temperature is ideal if his tummy is warm and his hands are cold. Indeed, if both are warm, your child is too hot, you must uncover him, if both are cold you must cover him more.
